A Man of Faith on Three Wheels: The Inspiring Journey of Richard Bland

If you’ve spent any time around Ashland or Mansfield, chances are you’ve seen Richard Bland—that familiar figure pedaling faithfully down the road in his bright reflector vest. But behind those miles and that determined smile is a story of resilience, faith, and gratitude that runs far deeper than most realize.

Born in 1972, Richard Bland’s life began with challenges few could imagine. When he was just three years old, tragedy struck. “In 1975, we were in a car wreck on Route 42 by WNCO Radio Station,” he recalled. “Mom was driving when someone hit us. I was thrown out of the car, and it landed on my head. My head was in ice—I was in a coma for a while. God healed me from that wreck.”

His recovery was nothing short of miraculous, but the journey forward wasn’t easy. School brought its own hurdles—learning struggles, teasing from classmates, and a constant battle to keep moving forward. “When I got up to 7th grade, the principal told me I was behind in learning,” he said. “I got placed at Dale Roy. I was mad then, but looking back, I see God had a plan.”

Over the years, Bland faced injuries and obstacles in his work life too—but through it all, he held tight to his faith. “I’m trying to do ministry,” he said with a smile. “God’s been good to me.”

Today, Bland shares that same hope and kindness wherever he goes. Whether it’s mowing a lawn, raking leaves, helping with small chores, or simply offering a wave and a blessing from his bicycle, he lives his faith out loud.

He and his wife, who have been married 13 years, share another passion close to their hearts—rescuing and caring for birds. “We’ve got pet birds we adopt and visit,” he said proudly. “We like to travel and see new things when we can.”

Throughout his life, many local churches and kind residents have helped him along the way, and he remembers each one of them in his prayers. “People have been so good to me,” he said. “I thank them, and I pray for them.”

As he continues to pedal through Ashland and Mansfield, Bland hopes to find small jobs—yard work, raking, or other chores—and says he’s always thankful for any help or donations offered his way.

So next time you see that familiar figure on his bike—reflector vest shining in the sun—take a moment to wave, smile, or call out a cheerful “God bless!” You might just make the day a little brighter for one of the most genuine hearts on three wheels.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
