Ashland County Gears Up to Break Another Record: “Cram the Cruiser” Returns Nov. 1

ASHLAND — After last year’s record-shattering success, the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is aiming even higher for 2025 — and they’re inviting the entire community to help make it happen.

The annual “Cram the Cruiser” Food Drive is set for Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ashland Walmart, 1996 E. Main St. The goal? To fill the patrol cruiser — and then some — with non-perishable food and essential items for Associated Charities of Ashland County, ensuring no local family goes hungry this holiday season.

But this year, the Patrol isn’t just thinking about food. They’re also aiming to beat last year’s record for both total pounds donated and cash contributions.

“Last year, Ashland County came through in an incredible way,” said Lt. Brad Bishop, Post Commander. “We were overwhelmed by the kindness, and this year, we’re hoping to raise the bar even higher.”

A Record-Breaking Legacy of Giving

In 2024, Ashland County residents proved just how big their hearts are, donating a record-breaking 4,200 pounds of food — nearly 1,000 pounds more than the year before — along with $1,300 in cash. The donations filled an entire van and helped stock the shelves at Associated Charities / Ashland County Food Bank well into the winter months.

“I was shocked,” said Christine Box, Executive Director of Associated Charities. “I actually drove by the post and thought the van was going to explode! This community continues to amaze me every year. The timing of this support couldn’t be better — it carries so many families through the holidays.”

Here’s a look back at how far Ashland County has come:

2018: 2,800 lbs.

2019: 2,380 lbs.

2020: 2,460 lbs.

2021: 3,080 lbs.

2022: 3,280 lbs.

2023: 3,420 lbs.

2024: 4,200 lbs.

“This is truly one of our favorite community events,” added Sgt. Kumor, who helped organize last year’s drive. “Seeing the outpouring of generosity — and the smiles on people’s faces — makes every bit of effort worth it.”

How to Help

If you can’t make it to the Walmart event on November 1st, donations can be dropped off anytime before the event at the Ashland Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, 805 US Route 250.

Suggested donation items include:

Cereal, spaghetti noodles and sauce (cans only), macaroni and cheese, canned meats (tuna, beef, chicken), crackers, ramen noodles, pancake mix and syrup, peanut butter and jelly, ketchup, mustard, toilet paper, dish soap, and hygiene products.

Every item and dollar stays right here in Ashland County, helping local families in need.

A Day of Community Spirit

The event will once again feature patrol officers, community volunteers, and even some vintage Highway Patrol cruisers brought out by retirees — a hit with kids and adults alike. “People love seeing the cars and snapping photos,” Kumor said. “It’s a fun, meaningful day for everyone.”

So mark your calendars, Ashland County. Let’s show once again what community spirit looks like — and make 2025 the biggest, most generous “Cram the Cruiser” yet.
