Ashland County Sheriff Warns of Juveniles Misusing Benadryl After Multiple Medical Emergencies

ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office is warning parents, schools and local businesses after investigating a series of incidents involving juveniles misusing the over-the-counter allergy medication Benadryl.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies and detectives have responded to multiple cases in recent weeks where minors purchased Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and ingested amounts well above the recommended dosage, leading to medical emergencies. Investigators also learned that in some instances, juveniles were allegedly providing the medication to friends, who then consumed excessive doses as well.

While it is not illegal in Ohio for juveniles to purchase Benadryl, the Sheriff’s Office said the pattern of incidents raises serious concerns that the medication may be being used for recreational purposes.

“The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office is committed to the safety of our children and will continue to investigate any criminal acts that may be associated with these incidents,” said Kurt J. Schneider in a safety bulletin released to the community.

Sheriff Schneider is urging local businesses, schools and residents to remain vigilant and watch for behavior that could place children at risk. He also specifically asked retailers who sell over-the-counter medications to review their policies and practices regarding sales to juveniles.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about similar incidents or concerns involving misuse of over-the-counter medications by minors to contact Detective Aaron Crites at the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office at (419) 289-3911.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that community awareness and cooperation are critical in preventing further incidents and ensuring the safety of Ashland County’s youth.
