Ashland Police Investigate Fatal Shooting on East Liberty Street
ASHLAND — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon at a residence in the 100 block of East Liberty Street.
According to the Ashland Police Division, officers and Ashland Fire Division personnel were dispatched to the home at approximately 2:15 p.m. on January 1, 2026, following a 911 call from a resident, identified as John Palermo. Palermo was not injured.
Upon arrival, first responders located John Grehn, 61, deceased inside the residence. Police confirmed that Robert Palermo, 24, of Ashland, was taken into custody at the scene. He is currently being held at the Ashland County Jail pending a review of the case by the Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation is being led by the Ashland Police Division in cooperation with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), with assistance from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives executed a search warrant at the residence as part of their ongoing efforts to collect evidence related to the shooting.
Officials also reported that the Ashland County Humane Society took custody of a dog found inside the home. The animal was unharmed.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains active but stated there are no safety concerns for the community at this time.
