Ashland Police Mourn Loss of Former Officer Brent Soles, Who Served Community for Over Two Decades
ASHLAND, OHIO — The Ashland Police Division is mourning the loss of one of its former officers, Brent Soles, who passed away Monday, March 2, 2026, at the age of 71.
Soles began his career with the Ashland Police Division in 1981, serving the community for more than two decades before retiring in 2003. During his time with the department, Soles earned the admiration and respect of fellow officers and supervisors alike for his professionalism, leadership, and calm demeanor in difficult situations.
According to the department, Soles was known as a leader rather than a follower, someone who took charge during challenging and dangerous calls. His steady presence often helped calm victims as well as fellow officers responding to tense situations.
Colleagues also remembered Soles for his fairness and compassion.
“He treated everyone fairly and with dignity,” the department shared in a public statement.
Because of his seniority, Soles spent many years working day shift alongside retired Lieutenant Steve Rush, who reflected on Soles’ work ethic and reliability.
“Brent was an exceptional officer,” Rush said. “He routinely reported to work one hour before his scheduled shift. His greatest quality was his ‘common sense.’ He followed orders without question and offered valuable input. I could trust Brent to run the shift in my absence and had full confidence in his abilities. He was truly an asset to the department as well as the City of Ashland.”
In honor of Soles’ service and memory, Ashland Police officers will be wearing mourning badges, a long-standing law enforcement tradition used to pay tribute to fallen or departed members of the policing family.
The Ashland Police Division extended condolences to Soles’ family, friends, and the many colleagues who served alongside him during his career protecting the community.
His legacy, fellow officers say, will be remembered not only for his years of service but also for the leadership, calm presence, and integrity he brought to the badge.
