Brandon Carpenter Picks Up Petition to Run for Ashland County Commissioner

ASHLAND COUNTY — Another candidate is entering the race for Ashland County Commissioner. Brandon Carpenter, a lifelong Ashland County resident and local business owner, started the process Tuesday by picking up his petition from the Ashland County Board of Elections, taking the first step toward putting his name on the 2026 ballot.

Carpenter now needs 50 valid signatures from registered voters to qualify for the race, which will challenge the seat currently held by Commissioner Denny Bittle.

“I believe Ashland County needs change,” Carpenter said. “A lot of younger people are not getting into politics. We’re at a point in society where young people need to get involved and not just sit on the sidelines and wish change would happen. You have to get involved to make change happen — and that’s why I’m running.”

A Push for Change and Financial Accountability

Carpenter said Ashland County has many strengths — from its diverse population to its strong sense of community — but also areas that need attention, particularly in fiscal management.

“We have a wonderful community here in Ashland County,” he said. “Between the Amish, Mennonite, and all the other residents, people coexist and support one another. But when it comes to county business, I think we need someone who is fiscally conservative and a better money manager. There are issues in how finances and operations are being handled, and I believe we can do better.”

If elected, Carpenter said his first priority would be to ensure that county residents feel heard and represented.

“One of the biggest issues I see is that people don’t feel their voices matter,” he said. “I want to be a commissioner who listens. I want the community to know they can come in, talk with me, and that their input will truly be valued.”

Experience in Business and Public Service

Carpenter’s background includes both public service and entrepreneurship. He first worked for the county in the maintenance department at the courthouse and county office building when he was 18. Later, he became a mechanic, and eventually founded his own companies: Haulerback Trucking and Carpenter Custom Truck and Trailer.

“I’ve run businesses here for 20 years, working with many local factories and suppliers,” Carpenter said. “I understand the needs of local business owners and how county decisions can impact the economy.”

In addition, Carpenter served 14 years with the Savannah Volunteer Fire Department, including four years as vice president, which he says gave him leadership experience and a deeper appreciation for community teamwork and service.

A Legacy of Local Leadership

Carpenter’s commitment to community service follows a family tradition — his grandfather served as Mayor of Bailey Lakes for 40 years.

“I’ve always looked up to my grandpa’s dedication,” Carpenter said. “He believed in serving people honestly and directly. That’s the kind of leadership I want to bring to the county.”

Describing himself as “a hardworking, blue-collar guy,” Carpenter said he’s not a career politician, but a lifelong resident who understands the people he hopes to represent.

“I’m not your typical politician,” he said. “I’m a working man, a patriot, and I love Ashland County. I just want to give people a voice — to make them feel like they matter again.”

Carpenter’s petition drive is now underway, as he gathers the required signatures to officially appear on the 2026 ballot for Ashland County Commissioner.
