The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury accident in the 2000 block of State Route 89.

While the officers were responding to a crash, a white male that was involved in the crash stole a vehicle of a witness to the crash and left the scene traveling southbound on State Route 89. Deputies and other law enforcement agencies began searching for the stolen vehicle. A short time later the vehicle was spotted in the 2500 block of Sr. 60 traveling southbound.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the vehicle continued to flee from law enforcement.

The stolen vehicle came to rest after crashing behind the H&H custom homes. The driver fled on foot into a wooded area, and drone teams were activated.

It was discovered during the incident that the male was running from law enforcement, because he was involved in a shooting in Morrow County. The male was located and taken into custody in the basement of a vacant residence on Tr. 457 at the Ashland and Holmes County line.

Yoder’s Red Barn Ice Cream Opens Tomorrow

The long awaited opening of the Yoder’s Red Barn Ice Cream is tomorrow, April 1st, from 11am to 9pm, and no, it’s not an April Fool’s Day prank!

As everyone knows, their Banana splits are second to none, and I am so looking forward to eating a few this year.

Just to let you all know, I have stopped in for a taste test of the Ice Cream, and with 50+ flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, it was difficult, but I’m here to say, the maple pecan has passed the test with flying colors!

So, if you would care to join me tomorrow for some awesome Ice Cream, let’s bring in the summer right at Yoder’s Red Barn. I can’t wait to get a cheeseburger, fries, and some ice-cream for lunch. Yum!

ASHLAND COUNTY PARK DISTRICT ANNOUNCES 80% OF FUNDS RAISED FOR OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTER

Ashland County Park District (ACPD) announced today that 80% of the funds needed to help build the Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center in TK Park have been raised.

In 2022, local philanthropists Bob and Jan Archer committed $250,000 to help fund the project and challenged the community to raise the additional $250,000 to help make it a reality. With 80% now raised, ACPD is well on the way to reaching that goal, but is still seeking donors.

Tax-deductible gifts to the Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center will help ACPD continue Davy McClure’s vision of having an education center/pavilion for the residents of Ashland County. Highlights of Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center include:

· Three season shelter/pavilion

· Bio-diverse educational habitats

· Flushable restrooms

· School bus accessible parking lot

100% of your donation to the Davy McClure Outdoor Education Center will go to supporting this project.

Community members interested in donating can call the park office at (419) 289-3524 or bring donations into the park offices at 1301 Park Street in Ashland. Please make checks payable to “Friends of the ACPD.”

ASHLAND UNIVERSITY HITS RECORD MARK DURING DAY OF GIVING

ASHLAND, Ohio – The office of institutional advancement at Ashland University reported a record Day of Giving, which was held during a 36-hour window on March 23-24. More than $350,000 was raised—the most ever for the eighth annual event—for a variety of initiatives, all of which support student success.

The record amount came from 679 donors, comprised of alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the university. Each donor had the option to designate their gift to a specific area or make an unrestricted gift to the Ashland Fund, which allows the university to direct resources to the areas of greatest need. There were 43 designations in all, including student scholarships, research, athletics, student organizations, military and veteran support and study abroad trips.

Gifts came in from 22 different states. While Ohio had the most donors and other nearby states were well represented, donations also came in from the likes of Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Christy Grundy, interim executive director of institutional advancement, was delighted with the final results from AU’s 2023 Day of Giving. “Our team is filled with gratitude for this community after such a successful Day of Giving. Each of these gifts shows the commitment from our board, alumni, friends, faculty and staff to our students and Ashland University,” she said.

Grundy added, “Together, we raised more than $135,000 toward annual student scholarships and $9,000 for the student emergency fund. (This) generosity will be deeply impactful. Thanks to all who worked diligently behind the scenes to make this day happen.”

Miller to Introduce Baby Products Tax Exemption Bill

COLUMBUS, OH – State Rep. Melanie Miller (R-City of Ashland) will introduce the Baby Products Tax Exemption Bill, companion legislation to Senate Bill 39. The legislation exempts certain baby products from the sales and use tax. Miller is a joint sponsor on the bill.

“The Baby Products Tax Exemption Bill recognizes the challenges Ohio families face in raising children and aims to alleviate their financial burden,” said Miller. “By providing tax exemptions for essential baby products, we hope to encourage people to stay in Ohio as we work to invest in our families.”

The bill proposes to create a sales and use tax exemption for certain baby products, including children’s diapers, car seats, cribs, strollers, baby carriers, and baby monitors. The exemption will ease the financial burden on Ohio families raising children. Additionally, the elimination of sales tax on these products will help ensure that Ohio families have access to the essential items necessary for the health and well-being of their children.

Miller also notes the bill represents a positive step towards supporting Ohio families and improving the lives of young children with this financial relief when taxes and inflation have been burdensome for Ohioans.

The legislation currently has nine (9) cosponsors in the Ohio House and is also joint sponsored by State Rep. Nick Santucci (R-Howland Twp.).

State Representative Melanie Miller is currently serving her first term in the Ohio House of Representatives. She represents the 67th House District, which includes all of Ashland County and the western portion of Medina County.
