City of Ashland Begins Search for Next Police Chief as Chief David Lay Prepares to Retire
ASHLAND — The City of Ashland has officially opened the search for its next Chief of Police as Chief David Lay prepares to retire, creating a major leadership transition for the Ashland Police Division.
According to the job posting, the Chief of Police will be responsible for leading day-to-day operations of the division, managing personnel and training, building and administering the police budget, overseeing equipment needs and replacement planning, maintaining records compliance, and strengthening relationships with the community, City leadership, and partner agencies.
The position also calls for active participation in public meetings and open communication with the media, along with the ability to manage critical incidents when necessary.
The City says it is seeking a candidate with strong communication skills, a people-first leadership approach, sound decision-making, adaptability for irregular hours, and a solid working knowledge of city government operations and applicable laws.
Applicants must be certified as a Peace Officer by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council, hold a valid Ohio driver’s license, be an Ohio resident, and have at least 10 years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer. The posting also requires applicants to hold the rank of lieutenant or above (or demonstrate comparable responsibilities) for consideration.
The position includes a benefits package featuring OP&F pension coverage, health insurance options, and paid time off including holidays, personal days, sick leave, and vacation, with compensation based on experience.
