Community Kindness and a Dog Named Margo
ASHLAND, OH – Early this afternoon, a heartwarming exchange took place at University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center that captured the very spirit of Ashland’s compassionate community.
Melissa Snow, a pharmacy technician at the hospital, stood beside Margo — a gentle dog recovering from severe injuries after being hit by a car — to present a $4,000 donation to No Pawz Left Behind, the local animal rescue group now caring for her.
The check, handed to No Pawz volunteer Michelle Sviatko, represents more than just financial support. It symbolizes the deep love and sense of compassion Ashland residents feel for their four-legged companions — especially those most in need.
Margo’s story began with tragedy. Struck by a car, she lay injured on the roadside. But she wasn’t alone. A canine companion, unhurt in the incident, stayed faithfully by her side, refusing to leave even as first responders from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office and shelter staff arrived to help. That simple act of loyalty moved many who heard the story, and when No Pawz posted about the emergency surgery needed to save Margo’s life, the community answered with overwhelming generosity.
“She was a good $6,000 emergency,” Sviatko explained. “And it’s moments like this that show us — we simply can’t do what we do without the community’s help.”
The $4,000 donation came from a basket raffle organized by the pharmacy department at UH Samaritan. “Every department created and donated a themed basket,” Snow said. “Whichever basket sold the most raffle tickets got to choose where the proceeds would go. Ours won, and we chose No Pawz.”
As for meeting Margo in person? Snow was visibly moved. “She’s incredible for everything she’s been through. Sweet, calm, and so friendly. She loved everyone here today. She’s made huge strides since the accident, and we’re all hopeful she’ll find a loving home soon.”
While Margo’s body still carries the marks of her ordeal, her gentle demeanor and wagging tail speak of resilience — and trust. Thanks to the dedication of No Pawz Left Behind and the kindness of Ashland citizens, her future looks far brighter.
“To everyone who gave, who shared her story, who cheered for her recovery — thank you,” said Sviatko. “You didn’t just help a dog. You reminded us what community means.”
