Faith and Society lecture, “Church Between the Times,” to be held Feb. 24

ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University’s Faith and Society lecture series resumes on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with “Church Between the Times: Practices of Belonging for a Changing World” by Rev. Ted A. Smith, Ph.D. One of the leading voices on the intersection of practical and political theology, Smith’s presentation will take place in room 115 of the Dauch College of Business and Economics starting at 7 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public.

In “Church Between the Times,” Smith will explore challenges facing congregations today and invites Christians to imagine forms of church life that move beyond membership, choice and programmatic belonging toward deeper practices of shared life and formation.

Smith is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Divinity at Emory University. He teaches in the areas of preaching and ethics and serves as director of Theological Education between the Times, a project that gathers diverse groups of people to think together about the meanings and purposes of theological education. Smith is also an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church.

Smith holds a bachelor’s degree from Duke University, a master’s from Oxford University, a master’s of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Emory University.

The ongoing Faith and Society lecture series is designed to give Ashland students and the Ashland community the opportunity to hear experts discuss critical topics of faith and its implications in contemporary society. It is sponsored by the Hilda E. Bretzlaff Foundation.
