‘General Patton’ to Rally the Troops at Ashland County Veterans Celebration
ASHLAND, OH – Legendary World War II General George S. Patton will return to duty—through the passionate performance of historical re-enactor Kenneth Neff Hammontree—at this year’s Ashland County Veterans Appreciation Celebration, promising a stirring tribute to American service members and the enduring cost of freedom.
The event, hosted by the Ashland County Veterans Appreciation Committee, is set to take place on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the Ashland County Airport. It is free and open to the public, with a full day of activities honoring veterans of all branches and all eras.
Living History with a Purpose
Hammontree, known throughout Ohio for his vivid portrayals of historical military figures, will take the stage from 3 to 3:30 p.m. as General Patton. Speaking in-character, Hammontree issued a public invitation:
“Good evening. General George Patton here,” he declared. “I would like to extend an invitation to all our military personnel in Ashland County and the surrounding counties to come to the Ashland County Airport this Saturday. We are having a special day just for our veterans and their families. Everything will be free—the food, the drinks, the entertainment—it’s going to be a very exciting Saturday.”
Patton’s speech will center around the price of freedom, drawing inspiration from the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C.
“Each of those stars—4,048 in total—represent 100 combat deaths,” Hammontree said. “It’s amazing to see that. On the marble below, it reads: Here we mark the price of freedom. That will be my message this Saturday.”
A Weekend of Honor, Fun, and Flight
The celebration kicks off the night before, Friday, August 8, with a free movie night for veterans and active-duty military at The Ashland Theatre, featuring the Civil War epic Glory. Vietnam veteran and local author Greg Gorrell will be in attendance to sign copies of his book Vietnam: Survival There and Home, with all proceeds supporting the event.
The main event on Saturday launches with opening ceremonies at 11 a.m., including a keynote address by Major General John C. Harris Jr., Adjutant General of the Ohio National Guard. At 11:45 a.m., a free lunch will be served, followed by a full schedule of live music, helicopter rides, historical displays, and family-friendly activities.
Helicopter Rides and Historic Aircraft
Warbird enthusiasts can explore an array of classic military planes—including the L-5, P-126, BC12D, Stinson 10, T-6, and TBM Avenger—on display. Attendees can book unforgettable Huey helicopter rides for $125 ($115 pre-paid) or Cobra helicopter rides for $800 ($775 pre-paid).
Family Fun All Day
Families can enjoy foam bashes, bounce houses, games, face painting, a woodcraft project from Home Depot, and even a visit from the Kroc Center’s mascot “RJ.” Free veteran haircuts will be offered from 1–3 p.m., while supplies last.
