High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Crash, Arrest in Hancock County
BUCYRUS, Ohio — A high-speed pursuit involving Bucyrus Post troopers early Saturday morning ended with a crash, a tense standoff, and the arrest of a Wyandot County man.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, troopers were dispatched at approximately 1:12 a.m. on April 11, 2026, to conduct a welfare check stemming from a reported domestic dispute.
Authorities say 27-year-old Tyler Rowalt, of Upper Sandusky, allegedly took his wife’s vehicle and was reported to be impaired, emotionally distraught, and possibly armed with a firearm while driving at speeds reaching 120 miles per hour.
Troopers located the vehicle around 1:15 a.m. near Johnson and Summit streets in Upper Sandusky and attempted a traffic stop. Rowalt failed to comply, leading to a lengthy pursuit.
During the chase, officials said Rowalt nearly struck a pursuing trooper and drove into oncoming lanes of traffic multiple times after entering U.S. Route 23, creating a dangerous situation for other motorists.
The pursuit came to an end when the vehicle crashed into a guardrail along State Route 15 near milepost 18 in Hancock County.
Following the crash, Rowalt reportedly refused commands to exit the vehicle, prompting authorities to shut down both directions of SR-15 for approximately 90 minutes.
In a tense moment before surrendering, troopers say Rowalt poured gasoline on himself while inside the vehicle and attempted to ignite it. After continued verbal commands from law enforcement, he ultimately complied and was taken into custody without further incident.
Rowalt was treated at the scene by Hancock County EMS for minor injuries. Despite earlier reports, no firearm was found inside the vehicle.
He was transported to Wyandot Memorial Hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Wyandot County Jail.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident remains under investigation.
