Judge Matthew George Announces Campaign for 5th District Court of Appeals
Newark, OH—Judge Matthew George, a constitutional conservative with more than 18 years of judicial experience as a Judge and Magistrate, today announced his candidacy for the Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals. George, currently serving as Judge of the Licking County Municipal Court, said he is running to ensure that Ohio’s appellate courts remain a strong defense against the growing influence of liberal judicial activism.
George has served on the bench for more than 18 years, including as Administrative Judge of one of Ohio’s busiest and best-performing municipal courts. During his tenure, he has earned a reputation for making tough decisions, maintaining strong case-resolution performance, and leading with integrity. Prior to his judgeship, he served as a magistrate in the Licking County Common Pleas Court, giving him deep experience across the judicial system.
A committed constitutional conservative, George is known for his originalist interpretation of the law and his refusal to allow ideology or political pressure to influence his rulings. He is a former president of the Federalist Society chapter during law school and a vocal defender of life, liberty, and the Second Amendment.
“Ohio families deserve judges who understand that the Constitution—not personal preference—governs what happens in our courts,” George said. “I will never back down from protecting the rule of law, safeguarding our freedoms, and stopping activist rulings that threaten the values we hold dear.”
George is a husband and father of three and an active member of Covenant Community Church. He is a member of the board of directors for Heartbeats pregnancy crisis centers in Newark and Zanesville. George is a graduate of Liberty Union High School, Ashland University where he was an Ashbrook Scholar, and Washington & Lee University School of Law.
