Loudonville Man Faces Felonious Assault Charge After Violent Domestic Incident; Bond Hearing Set

LOUDONVILLE, OH — A Loudonville man accused of severely injuring his mother in a violent domestic assault is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon for a bond hearing.

Matthew J. DeWitt, 29, charged with one count of Felonious Assault, will appear via Zoom before Ashland County Common Pleas Court Magistrate Paul T. Lange at 2:30 p.m. today  June 5, 2025. The charge stems from an incident that occurred just two days earlier, on June 3, at 722 North Market Street in Loudonville.

According to a press release from the Loudonville Police Department, officers were dispatched to a domestic assault in progress shortly after noon on Tuesday. While en route, officers requested Loudonville EMS for medical assistance.

Upon arrival, the first two officers encountered an active and violent situation and deployed their tasers to subdue the suspect, later identified as DeWitt. After securing him in custody, officers found the victim inside the residence suffering from serious injuries.

Loudonville EMS arrived within minutes and transported the victim to a nearby helipad. The victim was then flown by medical helicopter to Summa Health in Akron with life-threatening injuries.

DeWitt was transported separately under police supervision to UH Samaritan Medical Center in Ashland. After receiving medical clearance, he was booked into the Ashland County Jail.

Due to the severity of the incident, multiple outside agencies were brought in to assist with the investigation. These included the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland Police Division, Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Green-Perrysville Joint Fire District.

These agencies assisted Loudonville Police in executing a search warrant at the residence, processing the crime scene, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses.

The bond hearing will determine whether DeWitt will remain in custody or be released pending trial. He is charged under Ohio Revised Code Section 2903.11 with knowingly causing serious physical harm to another person — a second-degree felony.
