DIANNE’S DOGHOUSE
Mary
Mary Magdalene was an exceptionally gifted pup, with her ability to connect with humans of all ages, from new babies to senior citizens. She was always faithful and obedient and happy, happy, happy! and playful every minute of every day. Sounds like a perfect dog, right?
Like all puppies, she would chew and whine all night and pee on the floor and poop in a corner. But as she grew, she made me look up at the stars, watch a squirrel tightrope walk on the wires and remind me to smell the flowers and enjoy God’s handiwork.
Mary passed her Therapy Dog test on her first birthday in only ten minutes. This began her journey of caring and compassion for every human she encountered, for her entire fifteen years of life.
She was little so I could place her in the lap of a wheelchair bound or bed fast person in a nursing home. Because she was so soft and furry her visitors never wanted their time with her to be over. Mary was the best Hospice volunteer in all the surrounding counties.
Word spread and she was invited to become the first court dog. She would sit for two to three hours with an abused child who had to testify in court with the abuser in the same room, always alert, and always protecting the child.
Because she absorbed the anxiety of the child, she would come home, refuse food and sleep for at least four hours, then be ready to run and jump in the snow and get ready for her next assignment.
Love was first on Mary’s priority list. She never let the stuff of life intrude. Mary taught me to play and rest and spend time with God.
Since I do believe all dogs go to heaven, we will meet again. Because Grace and Joy mourned Mary’s death and were so sad for quite a while, I brought baby Joseph home. Here we go again!!!
