PumpHouse District Project Takes Shape as Construction and Historic Renovation Begin in Downtown Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio — Even as winter lingers, momentum is building rapidly in downtown Ashland as work officially begins on the city’s highly anticipated PumpHouse District redevelopment project.

Ashland Mayor Matt Miller said construction is now underway on the first of several modern, multi-story apartment buildings planned for the former foundry site, marking a major milestone in the transformation of the long-underutilized area.

At the same time, crews have begun extensive renovation work inside the historic PumpHouse building itself. According to Miller, significant progress has already been made as the structure is being carefully prepared for its next chapter — a 90-room boutique hotel that will preserve the building’s historical significance while introducing new life and economic activity to the downtown corridor.

“This is only the beginning,” Miller said, noting that the PumpHouse District is designed to become one of the most vibrant and active areas in the heart of the city.

City leaders envision the redevelopment as a catalyst for downtown growth, blending housing, hospitality, and walkable amenities while honoring Ashland’s industrial heritage. Once complete, the district is expected to attract new residents, visitors, and investment, further strengthening the city’s downtown core.

The PumpHouse District is poised to become a cornerstone of Ashland’s long-term revitalization efforts, signaling a future where history and modern development come together to shape the next era of Ashland.
