Reckless Driver Crashes on I-71, Flees on Foot, Apprehended on State Route 89
Ashland County — A Mansfield man is facing multiple charges after a high-speed crash on Interstate 71 Tuesday afternoon that led to a brief foot chase along State Route 89.
The crash occurred around 4 p.m. in the southbound lane of I-71 at the 189.4-mile marker, where a 2018 Toyota Camry driven by 31-year-old Kalvin Gross of Mansfield slammed into a guardrail after what troopers say was extremely reckless driving.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Gross was attempting to pass other vehicles on the right with speed as a contributing factor.
After striking the guardrail, Gross allegedly fled the wrecked vehicle on foot, running up the embankment to State Route 89. Bystanders who witnessed the crash pointed Troopers and Sheriff’s Deputies toward his location.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Troopers and Deputies with the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office tracked him down and took him into custody without incident. Gross was uninjured.
Gross refused all OVI testing, and was booked into the Ashland County Jail and is facing the following charges:
OVI (operating a vehicle impaired)
Reckless operation
Passing on the right
Hit-skip
Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland Fire Department & EMS assisted on scene.
No other injuries were reported.
