UPDATE: Suspect Charged Following Shots Fired Incident at Tree Crew on U.S. 250 in Ashland County

ASHLAND COUNTY, OH – Days after a tense standoff on U.S. Route 250 North, the man arrested at the scene has now been formally charged.

Jonathan Kellogg, 43, a resident of Greenwich, was charged Tuesday in Ashland County Common Pleas Court with one count of Having Weapons While Under Disability, a third-degree felony under Ohio Revised Code 2923.13.

The charge stems from a May 30, 2025 incident where Kellogg allegedly fired several shots while workers from Asplundh Tree Expert Company were trimming trees outside his residence at 563 U.S. Route 250 North. The workers told deputies they had knocked on the door to inform the residents of their presence, but received no answer. Moments later, while in the tree, they reported hearing multiple gunshots coming from the property. Fearing for their safety, the crew took cover and dialed 911.

Deputies and detectives with the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly, using sirens and a bullhorn to call out to the suspect. After roughly ten minutes, Kellogg exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. Sheriff Kurt J. Schneider later praised deputies for their response and peaceful resolution of a potentially dangerous situation.

A search warrant executed the same day turned up eight spent shell casings and a gun safe, but no firearms were located. According to a woman named Marla, who also lives at the residence, the key to the gun safe was missing. Investigators returned on June 2 with a warrant specifically to access the safe.

The Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office noted in its bond recommendation that Kellogg has a violent criminal history, including a 1999 Felonious Assault conviction in Lorain County and a 2006 Domestic Violence conviction out of Lorain Police Department. These prior convictions are the basis for the weapons disability charge, which prohibits certain individuals from possessing firearms under Ohio law.

During a bond hearing, Magistrate Emily M. Bates set bond at $30,000, with the option of 10% cash or a full surety. The court also imposed strict conditions, including GPS drug testing, no use of alcohol or THC, and a ban on possessing firearms or any weapons.

Kellogg’s initial appearance hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. via video conference. If he posts bond, he must appear in person at the Ashland County Court of Common Pleas.

As with all criminal cases, Kellogg is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
