7-Year-Old Boy Struck by Vehicle on State Route 89, Flown to Akron Children’s Hospital

ASHLAND COUNTY, OH — A 7-year-old nonverbal autistic boy was flown to Akron Children’s Hospital after being struck by a vehicle Saturday evening in the 1200 block of State Route 89.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 8:30 p.m. According to an Ashland Post Trooper, a 60-year-old Lorain man was traveling north on State Route 89 when the child reportedly entered the roadway and was struck.

The boy appeared dazed and had difficulty communicating with emergency personnel. Metro Life Flight transported him to Akron Children’s Hospital. His condition and the full extent of his injuries were unknown Saturday night.

The driver remained at the scene and has not been charged. Authorities did not indicate that drugs or alcohol were suspected.

The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office, Polk Jackson Fire Department & EMS, Ashland EMS, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Ashland Post responded. State Route 89 was closed for approximately one hour while emergency crews treated the child and authorities investigated the crash.

The child’s name is being withheld because he is a juvenile. The incident remains under investigation.
