A High-Steaks Rescue: Calf Stuck on Railroad Bridge Gives Ashland Responders No Moo of Thanks
ASHLAND, Ohio — Ashland Police Division Officers and Ashland Firefighters had a beefy problem on their hands Tuesday afternoon: a calf stuck on the railroad bridge above Union Street.
After receiving a call from the Ashland railroad, Ashland Police Division Officers responded to find the animal stranded on the tracks, with its legs caught in the gaps and with Union Street below.
This was one pedestrian who had definitely taken the wrong route.
Officers and members of the Ashland Fire Department worked to bring the calf off the bridge, using sheets of plywood to create a solid surface over the gaps. The makeshift walkway gave rescuers a way to guide their four-legged visitor toward safer footing.
At first, the calf seemed willing to cooperate. But when it came time to head down to a trailer called in to transport it, the animal apparently decided it had some objections.
Getting off the bridge was one thing. Agreeing to the ride was another.
The rescue briefly became a test of patience as Officers and Firefighters worked to persuade the stubborn passenger to finish its trip.
For ACP News, which has watched Firefighters handle plenty of unusual calls, this one earned a special place on the list. I have seen the department rescue many things, but a calf stuck on railroad tracks above Union Street was a first.
Eventually, Firefighters and Officers rescued the calf, bringing the afternoon’s unusual predicament to an end.
And after all that effort? Not even so much as a “moo” to say thanks.
