Akron Man Dies During Fugitive Task Force Arrest Attempt; BCI Investigating

AKRON, Ohio — A 34-year-old man died Thursday morning, October 1, after a confrontation with members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force during an attempted arrest at an Akron home.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, task force members went to a residence in the 500 block of Brown Street at approximately 8:30 a.m. to arrest Johnathan Moore on an active felony warrant for vandalism.

Officers contacted two residents who confirmed Moore was inside, the release stated. Task force members announced their presence throughout the home before reaching a locked bedroom door.

After additional announcements received no response, officers forced open the door and encountered Moore armed with a firearm, according to the Marshals Service.

Officers gave Moore multiple commands to drop the weapon. When he did not comply, an officer deployed a Taser, the agency said.

According to the release, Moore fired one round, striking himself in the head, as an officer fired at least one round that struck Moore in the chest.

Officers provided aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Moore was transported to Summa Health Akron, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Marshals Service said Moore had previously been charged with burglary, assault, strangulation, gross sexual imposition and attempted rape. The release did not provide the outcomes of those charges. Authorities also said Moore was known to own a firearm.

At the request of the U.S. Marshals Service and Akron Police Department, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene and will investigate the shooting.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for review before being presented to a Summit County grand jury for evaluation, according to the release.

The release did not identify the officer who fired or specify the officer’s employing agency.
