Ashland County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Scam Calls Threatening Arrest

ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving a caller impersonating a sheriff’s sergeant and threatening arrest unless money is paid.

In a social media alert, the Sheriff’s Office said it has received several reports of someone calling area residents and claiming to be “SGT Saylor.” The caller demands payment for supposedly missing a court date or jury duty.

Authorities emphasized that the caller is neither Sgt. Saylor nor anyone else from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office explained that scammers impersonate law enforcement to frighten people and pressure them into acting quickly. They may claim someone has an outstanding warrant, owes money, missed jury duty or has a loved one in trouble. Their goal is to obtain money or personal information.

Residents are urged to never send money, gift cards or cryptocurrency, or provide personal information, to someone making these demands over the phone.

If a call seems suspicious, the Sheriff’s Office advises hanging up and contacting the agency directly using a verified phone number.

The agency stressed that it will never call and demand immediate payment or ask someone to send money to avoid arrest or resolve a legal matter.

Officials also encouraged residents to discuss these scams with elderly parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends who may be targeted.

By sharing the warning and talking with loved ones, residents can help prevent others from becoming victims.
