Gavin Casdorph Sworn In as Ashland’s Newest Police Officer
ASHLAND — Gavin Casdorph was sworn in as the newest member of the Ashland Police Division on Monday, October 26, 2026, during a ceremony with Mayor Matt Miller, Police Chief Curt Dorsey, family members and supporters.
Miller administered the oath of office, with Casdorph pledging to uphold the constitutions of the United States and Ohio, enforce Ashland’s laws and ordinances, and faithfully and impartially carry out his duties.
Before administering the oath, Miller spoke about the importance of character in law enforcement and the role officers play in keeping Ashland safe.
“When we’re choosing the men and women who will wear the uniform, we are looking for men and women who reflect all the character attributes that we want to grow in our people and families here in this community,” Miller said.
The mayor said those qualities include humility, kindness, compassion and the willingness to do the right thing under difficult circumstances. He also recognized the cooperation among city police officers, sheriff’s deputies and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
“What we’re looking for is a group of people that we can trust to keep this community safe for years to come,” Miller said. “And I think we found someone with this young guy.”
Dorsey welcomed Casdorph and assured him that both the division and the community would support him throughout his career. He encouraged the new officer to maintain his priorities of God, family and work.
“All these people are here to support you,” Dorsey said. “We’re here to give you a great career, and this community is here to support you.”
Following the oath, police chaplain Reed Firestone offered a prayer for Casdorph and his fellow first responders, asking for safety, guidance, courage and compassion as they serve the community.
The ceremony concluded with congratulations for Ashland’s newest officer.
