Happy Birthday, Doug Miller: ACP News Honors a Life of Service and History
ACP News is proud to wish a very happy 77th birthday to Doug Miller, a Vietnam veteran, retired Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper and valued contributor whose “This Day in History” series continues to preserve the stories of America’s veterans.
Through his firsthand memories and historical features, Miller has given ACP News readers a personal look at military service, sacrifice and the experiences of those who served far from home.
As Miller celebrates his birthday, he remembers another birthday spent under dramatically different circumstances: August 28, 1969, when he turned 20 while serving in Vietnam.
A 20th Birthday in Vietnam
“Thursday, August 28, 1969, is a day I remember well because it was my 20th birthday,” Miller recalled.
At the time, Miller had been with Delta Company for approximately two weeks. His unit had been conducting reconnaissance-in-force missions, previously known as search-and-destroy operations, as well as ambush patrols.
It was Delta Company’s turn to rotate into Firebase Mahone for resupply and to help protect the base camp. Soldiers normally spent about two days there while waiting for their next mission. During that time, they also remained on standby as a ready reaction force.
Miller’s 20th birthday, however, would not be a day of rest.
“We were told to ‘saddle up’, put on our gear, because we were heading south of the base camp to conduct a BDA, or bomb damage assessment,” Miller said.
Tactical airstrikes had struck an occupied enemy base camp the previous night. Miller and the other members of his unit were sent into the area to assess the damage and gather information.
“The area was devastated,” Miller recalled. “Several bunkers had been destroyed, and we found some enemy equipment.”
The unit encountered one enemy soldier during the operation. Miller said fellow soldier Mike Howard opened fire, but the man managed to escape.
After completing the assessment, Miller and his fellow soldiers returned to Firebase Mahone.
“I took a moment to give thanks and to enjoy being 20 years old,” Miller said. “I had 348 days left in-country.”
