Howard Man Killed in Knox County UTV Crash

DANVILLE, OH — A Howard man was killed after a utility task vehicle traveled off the road and overturned early Tuesday morning in Jefferson Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers from the Mount Gilead Post and Knox County sheriff’s deputies responded to Harrisburg Road near Chapel Road at approximately 4:44 a.m. after the Knox County 911 Dispatch Center received a call from a motorist who discovered the crash.

The preliminary investigation found that Eric G. Carpenter, 52, of Howard, was driving a 2024 Polaris RZR southbound on Harrisburg Road when the UTV traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and overturned. The vehicle came to rest on its side in the roadway.

Carpenter was ejected from the UTV and died from his injuries at the scene.

The Highway Patrol was assisted by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District, Mount Vernon Association of Police Chaplains and Danville Tire & Alignment.

The crash remains under investigation by the Mount Gilead Post.
