Mayor Matt Miller Update 10-26-2026: Lincoln Park Improvements, Mickey Mart Plans and Holiday Events

ASHLAND, Ohio — Additional improvements at Lincoln Park, plans for a new Mickey Mart near Ashland’s industrial park and a busy schedule of fall and holiday events were among the topics Mayor Matt Miller discussed during his October 26 update with Ashland County Pictures.

Miller also announced a ribbon cutting for the downtown Ashland mural and said leasing at the Pump House District apartments is expected to begin in November.

More improvements planned for Lincoln Park

Following last week’s dedication, Lincoln Park is already drawing children and families to the former Lincoln Elementary School property on Ashland’s northeast side, Miller said.

The city purchased the property from the school board for approximately $1,000 after City Council approved the acquisition about a year ago. The former school had been demolished and its playground removed, leaving neighborhood families without the recreation space they once enjoyed.

With help from the Ashland Rotary Club and community donors, the property now offers a new place for children to play.

“We wanted those young children to be able to spend time outdoors on a playground,” Miller said.

Several finishing touches remain. Plans include an American flag and flagpole, along with a permanent brick sign or monument incorporating the original Lincoln Elementary School cornerstone.

Miller said several individuals and families contacted his office after the dedication to offer support for the remaining projects.

The city is also obtaining quotes for an 8-foot chain-link fence around the basketball court at Troy Road and 11th Street. Because the court sits near the streets, Miller urged players to be careful when basketballs leave the playing area.

The proposed fence is intended to help keep balls on the court and protect those using it.

Downtown mural ribbon cutting set for Tuesday

A ribbon cutting for the downtown Ashland mural at Union and Second streets is scheduled for noon Tuesday, October 27.

The project was developed through a partnership between the Leadership Ashland Class of 2026, the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce and the mayor’s office.

City crews have installed planters and boxwoods around the mural. A donor recognition stone, donated by Ashland Monument to the Leadership Ashland class, lists businesses and individuals who contributed to the project.

Miller said a flag has also been placed on the nearby pole, and Edison-style string lights are planned.

The mural is already attracting people who stop to take photographs, he said.

Costume Capers and citywide trick-or-treat this week

Downtown Costume Capers will take place Tuesday, October 27, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Local merchants will distribute treats, while community organizations will offer giveaways. The mayor’s office will be at Foundation Plaza handing out M&M’s.

Ashland’s citywide trick-or-treat will follow Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. Miller said additional police officers will be out during the event to help keep participants safe.

The mayor emphasized that citywide trick-or-treat takes place rain or shine. A serious storm or other public safety threat could prompt officials to reconsider, but ordinary rainy weather does not change the schedule.

Keeping trick-or-treat on the Thursday before Halloween allows families to plan ahead, he said.

Free Veterans Day breakfast returns November 11

The mayor’s annual Veterans Day breakfast will be held Wednesday, November 11, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the Ashland Eagles Club.

The breakfast is free for veterans and active-duty U.S. military members. Each may bring one guest, who does not need to be a veteran.

Miller said the Eagles Club is the event’s largest underwriter. Attendance typically reaches approximately 250 to 300 people.

The breakfast offers an opportunity for the community to recognize military service while veterans gather for a meal and fellowship.

Candy Cane Trail and Christmas parade dates announced

Miller said Candy Cane Trail is scheduled to open Sunday, November 29, with the opening celebration expected to begin at 6 p.m.

The annual event includes fireworks, and candy is typically part of the celebration.

Ashland’s Christmas parade will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, December 5. Downtown Christmas tree lighting festivities and fireworks are also planned that evening.

Those interested in entering a float can contact the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce or Ashland Main Street for registration information, Miller said.

Mickey Mart planned near industrial park

Miller discussed City Council’s vote last week to sell 14 acres to Mickey Mart for a planned development along U.S. 250 near the roundabout in front of the industrial park.

He described the proposed business as a flagship store that would help meet a need for convenient food, drinks and fuel on the north side of the city.

According to Miller, more than 1,000 people work in the industrial park. Some have only 30 minutes for lunch, making trips to restaurants on Claremont Avenue or East Main Street difficult.

The mayor said workers and employers have raised that concern for years.

A nearby convenience store and filling station would give employees a closer option during their breaks, he said. No construction or opening date was announced during the update.

Pump House District leasing expected in November

Miller said the Pump House District apartments are expected to begin leasing in November.

Recent work has included sod, trees, shrubs and other landscaping around the apartment buildings.

For information about floor plans and rental rates, Miller directed prospective tenants to search online for Vision Development’s Pump House District apartments.

He described the development as a welcome addition to Ashland as work moves toward the anticipated start of leasing.

I would like to give a huge shout-out to Bill Harris Dealerships for sponsoring the monthly updates with Ashland Mayor, Matt Miller. this will help to ensure that Ashland County Pictures (ACP) will be able to continue serving the Ashland area with breaking news and up to date information.
