Remembering James Becker, Ashland’s Beloved “Mountain Man”

ASHLAND — Sometimes a simple Facebook memory can bring back the face, voice and spirit of someone who left a lasting impression on a community.

A post from six years ago recently resurfaced, bringing back memories of James F. Becker, affectionately known by many as “Jim the Mountain Man” and “The Mountain Man of Ashland.”

For those who encountered Becker during his travels around Ashland, he was difficult to forget. He was always willing to stop and talk, and conversations with him were always pleasant. Becker regularly spoke about his faith in Jesus Christ and was known for his willingness to lend a helping hand.

Time has a way of allowing memories to fade, but seeing his photograph or hearing his name can quickly remind longtime residents of the familiar man they once encountered along Ashland’s roads.

Becker was also known as “Preacher,” a nickname reflecting the importance of his Christian faith and his desire to share it with others.

James F. Becker died Sept. 20, 2019, at his home in Lansford. He was 84.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Becker was the son of the late Adam and Elizabeth Otto Becker. During his working years, he was employed in landscaping as a tree surgeon, a fitting profession for a man who became remembered for his rugged, outdoorsman appearance.

To some, he was “Preacher.” To others, he was “Jim the Mountain Man.” But throughout the Ashland community, he was best known simply as “The Mountain Man.”

Years after his passing, Becker continues to be remembered for his kindness, his willingness to help and his unwavering faith in Jesus. His story is also a reminder that some of the most memorable people in a community are those who always have time to stop, talk and offer an encouraging word.
