Troopers Recover 27 Stolen Firearms Following Multi-County Pursuit on I-71
Aviation unit tracks two Columbus suspects after they allegedly flee from a stolen vehicle in Ashland County
ASHLAND, Ohio — Two Columbus residents were arrested after an early-morning pursuit involving a stolen vehicle led Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers to recover 27 stolen firearms and a stolen Taser.
The incident began at approximately 1:41 a.m. Aug. 3, when troopers attempted to stop a 2013 Hyundai Elantra traveling southbound on Interstate 71 in Ashland County. According to the Patrol, the vehicle was observed committing distracted-driving and speeding violations and was later confirmed to have been stolen.
Troopers activated their emergency lights, but the driver allegedly refused to stop, beginning a pursuit that eventually continued into Delaware County.
During the pursuit, troopers successfully deployed a tire-deflation device. Although the damaged tires caused the Hyundai to slow, the driver allegedly continued fleeing until the vehicle left the roadway.
Both occupants then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, authorities said.
The Patrol’s Aviation Section tracked the suspects from the air and directed troopers on the ground to their location. Both individuals were taken into custody without further incident.
Troopers searching the scene located two bags, one inside the Hyundai and another allegedly discarded during the pursuit. The bags contained 27 stolen firearms and a stolen Taser, according to OSHP.
The suspects were identified as Martell Dawson, 25, and Andez Henry, 18, both of Columbus. They were transported to the Ashland County Jail and charged with receiving stolen property and failure to comply.
The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The incident remains under investigation.
