Two Ribbon Cuttings Showcase Major Transformation at Charles Mill Lake Park
More than $8.5 million in improvements bring upgraded marina facilities, waterfront camping, a destination playground and new recreational amenities
MANSFIELD, Ohio — With two ceremonial snips of a ribbon, years of planning and millions of dollars in improvements officially came to life at Charles Mill Lake Park on Friday, July 31.
The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District celebrated two major projects during an exciting afternoon of ribbon-cutting ceremonies, one at Charles Mill Marina and another at the park’s newly transformed beach and campground area.
Together, the projects represent an investment of more than $8.5 million in the lake and its recreational facilities. Campers and boaters who have experienced the improvements are already calling them outstanding.
At Charles Mill Marina, MWCD officials unveiled a $1.2 million renovation that modernized the houseboat docking area and surrounding shoreline infrastructure.
“This has been a really exciting project,” MWCD Executive Director Craig Butler told those gathered for the ceremony. “Overall, this is a home-run project for us.”
The marina improvements include new concrete docks and abutments, upgraded electrical and water connections, a new concrete walking path, expanded parking and new stairs that remain under construction. Green infrastructure and stormwater-management practices were also incorporated to reduce the project’s environmental impact.
Construction crews faced difficult conditions, including winter weather, cold temperatures and work performed around approximately nine feet of water.
The Ohio General Assembly provided slightly more than $900,000 toward the marina project through the state’s One-Time Strategic Community Investment Fund. MWCD and Charles Mill Marina operators Bob and Andrew Shradley also invested in the improvements.
Butler recognized Ohio Sen. Mark Romanchuk, State Rep. Marilyn John, State Rep. Melanie Miller and former Sheriff E. Wayne Risner for helping champion the project.
What began more than two years ago as a conversation about repairing the shoreline where houseboats dock quickly developed into a major regional investment.
“This is not just because it is where we park the houseboats at Charles Mill Lake, but it is really a regional amenity,” Butler said. “It continues to help us improve the regional economy and the recreation space here at the conservancy.”
The celebration then moved to the newly renovated beach campground, where MWCD dedicated a sweeping $7.3 million transformation designed to give families a front-row seat to everything Charles Mill Lake has to offer.
The project includes 37 full-hookup RV campsites, new restrooms, sports courts, a pavilion overlooking the lake and an eye-catching destination playground featuring slides leading toward the beach.
Pete Novotny, MWCD chief of recreation, said the campground was intentionally designed to take advantage of the peninsula’s waterfront views.
“It’s all about connecting people to the outdoors,” Novotny said. “It’s really special when you’re able to spend a night camping along the waterfront.”
For visitors who do not own a camper, the park has also introduced rental RVs through General RV. The units have been placed at some of the campground’s most desirable sites, allowing more families to enjoy an overnight lakeside experience.
Novotny said the district hopes the improved campground, playground and beach become the backdrop for countless family memories.
Whether children are racing down the playground slides, families are relaxing beside their campers or boaters are returning to newly upgraded docks, the two projects have reshaped the visitor experience at Charles Mill Lake.
State Rep. Marilyn John praised both transformations after touring the park.
“Sometimes, when we get involved in our lives and in the state, we forget how beautiful the state of Ohio is,” John said. “Then I come out to places like Charles Mill, and I’m reminded of why I choose to live here.”
She called the improvements beautiful and said residents now have something at Charles Mill Lake of which they can be genuinely proud.
The projects are part of MWCD’s long-term commitment to improving outdoor recreation throughout the region. Butler said that by 2030, the district expects to have invested more than $350 million in projects that strengthen the regional economy and enhance recreational opportunities for Ohio residents and out-of-state visitors.
At Charles Mill Lake, the results are now visible from the shoreline to the campground: better docks, modern camping facilities, new places to play and even more reasons for families to return.
