Judicial Watch Announces Release of More Than 1,000 Hours of January 6 Police Body Camera Footage

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Judicial Watch announced that more than 1,000 hours of Metropolitan Police Department body-worn camera footage from the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol events have been released following a court victory in a District of Columbia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit. According to Judicial Watch, the release includes approximately 1,627 videos recorded by officers responding to the events at and around the Capitol.

The footage was released after an April 2026 ruling by a D.C. court, which found that the Metropolitan Police Department could not broadly withhold or heavily censor the recordings before making them public. Judicial Watch had sought the records through a FOIA request after initially being denied access to the videos.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said the release represents “a hard-fought victory for transparency” and encouraged the public, lawmakers, law enforcement officials and members of the media to review the footage for themselves.

The newly released videos are available for public viewing through Judicial Watch’s online archive.

The January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol has remained the subject of extensive criminal investigations, congressional inquiries and public debate. The release of these body camera recordings adds to the publicly available evidence documenting the events of that day.
