Ontario Police Department Mourns Unexpected Passing Of K-9 Fender
ONTARIO, OH — The Ontario Police Department is mourning the sudden and unexpected passing of K-9 Officer Fender, a 9-year-old service dog who served the community alongside his handler, Officer Jeremy Mohn.
According to the Ontario Police Department, K-9 Fender passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026, while boarded at a professional trainer’s kennel. Officer Mohn was away on vacation with his family at the time. The cause of death is unknown.
K-9 Fender was described by the department as an invaluable member of the Ontario Police Department, serving with dedication, bravery and distinction throughout his career. Fender assisted officers in the field, helped keep the community safe and also served as a beloved ambassador during public outreach events.
For Officer Mohn, Fender was far more than a working partner. The department said the bond between a K-9 and handler extends well beyond the shift, and Fender was a deeply loved member of the Mohn family.
“The loss of K-9 Fender is a tragedy that impacts our entire department and the citizens of Ontario,” Assistant Chief Robert Griefenstine said. “Fender served our city with honor, and his presence will be deeply missed. We are committed to supporting Officer Mohn and his family through this incredibly difficult time.”
The Ontario Police Department said information regarding memorial arrangements or department honors will be released once details are finalized. The department is also asking for privacy for Officer Mohn and his family as they grieve the sudden loss of their partner and family member.
