One Dead, Three Injured in Three-Vehicle Crash in Wayne County
CANAAN TOWNSHIP — One person was killed and three others were injured Monday morning in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 83 and State Route 604, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers from the Wooster Highway Patrol Post responded to the crash at approximately 8:58 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026. The crash remains under investigation.
According to the preliminary investigation, a blue 2024 Chevrolet Trax was traveling southbound on State Route 83, while a white 2024 Chrysler Voyager was traveling northbound on State Route 83.
The Patrol said the driver of the Chevrolet Trax failed to yield the right of way and began making a left turn to travel east onto State Route 604. The Trax then collided with the northbound Chrysler Voyager.
After the impact, the Chrysler traveled off the east side of the roadway and came to rest in a field. The Chevrolet Trax was redirected by the collision and struck a light green 2026 Chevrolet Trailblazer, which was also traveling southbound on State Route 83 behind the Trax.
Doris L. Mace, 61, of Rittman, a passenger in the Chrysler Voyager, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Patrol said Mace was restrained with a safety belt system.
Brittany R. Covender, 35, of Akron, was driving the Chevrolet Trax. According to the Patrol, Covender was not wearing a safety belt and sustained serious injuries.
Cindy L. Jewell Frink, 47, of Massillon, was driving the Chrysler Voyager. She was wearing a safety belt and sustained minor injuries. Marceline C. Heilman, 56, of Polk, was also a passenger in the Chrysler Voyager. Heilman was wearing a safety belt and sustained minor injuries.
Todd J. Lewis, 62, of Medina, was driving the Chevrolet Trailblazer. The Patrol said Lewis was wearing his safety belt and reported no apparent injuries.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Central Fire District EMS, Wooster Fire & EMS, Lodi Fire & EMS, the Wayne County Coroner’s Office and Wadsworth Towing.
