Long-Controversial Traffic Island Removed at Second and Cottage Streets
ASHLAND — After years of complaints, crashes and close calls, the traffic island at the intersection of Second Street and Cottage Street is officially gone.
The island, which sat in the middle of Second Street near Cottage Street, had long been considered by many residents to be both an eyesore and a traffic hazard. Over the years, it had become well known for being struck by vehicles, damaging cars and causing frustration for drivers who traveled through the area.
In one final twist, before city crews who were scheduled to remove it in a week or so, another vehicle struck the island and rolled over this morning, one last crash involving the pole, moved up the time frame to be taken out for good.
Residents who had pushed for the island’s removal finally got their wish, as crews removed the concrete obstruction and pole from the roadway. For many, the removal marks the end of a long-running concern at that intersection.
Now, the question becomes whether crashes in that area will stop or at least be greatly reduced.
Only time will tell, but for now, the island that claimed many vehicles over the years is gone for good.
