Three Months Before Vietnam: Doug Miller Looks Back on Fort Polk, May 1969

In this day in history, Vietnam veteran Doug Miller shared a single photo and just one sentence of memory, but the image says plenty.

The photograph was taken at Fort Polk, Louisiana, in May of 1969. Standing on the left is Jim Kinsey, a good friend of Miller’s and someone he went to high school with. At the time, Kinsey was completing Advanced Infantry Training.

For Miller, the photo marked a moment just before life would change.

“In 8 weeks, I will be deploying to Vietnam,” Miller wrote.

The faded photo captures two young men in uniform, standing together during a time when many across the country were being trained, shipped out and sent into an uncertain war half a world away. For Miller, the image is more than just a snapshot from military training. It is a reminder of friendship, youth, service and the reality that Vietnam was no longer something distant, it was just weeks away.

May of 1969 would become one of those moments frozen in time. A good friend nearby. Fort Polk in the background. Advanced Infantry Training underway. And for Doug Miller, the countdown to Vietnam already beginning.

Sometimes history is told through long stories. Other times, it is held in a single photograph.
