Troopers safely stop runaway pickup truck in Erie County
SANDUSKY – Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Sandusky Post safely stopped a runaway pickup truck and trailer early Tuesday morning after the driver reported being unable to slow down while traveling on state Route 2.
At approximately 12:09 a.m., troopers received reports of a gray Ram 3500 traveling westbound on state Route 2 in Lorain County. The driver told troopers that he could not stop the truck because the vehicle’s cruise control would not disengage. The driver said the brakes were not working, the steering wheel was locked, and efforts to turn off the engine, shift into neutral, and engage the parking brake were unsuccessful.
Troopers in Erie County positioned themselves ahead of the truck’s path and successfully deployed a tire deflation device, bringing the truck to a controlled stop before it entered a construction zone.
Multiple agencies assisted, including the Amherst Police Department, Huron Police Department and Sheffield Village Police Department and Erie County Sheriff’s Office.
