Cast Into a New Adventure: Free Fly-Fishing Class Coming to Ashland County
ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio — Residents looking to reel in a new outdoor hobby are invited to grab a fly rod and join the Ashland County Park District for a free evening of fly-fishing instruction.
The “Learn to Fly Fish” class will be held Thursday, July 23, from approximately 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the David McClure Outdoor Education Center on State Route 60, across from Spring Meadow Veterinary Clinic.
Ashland County Park District Commissioner Bob DeSanto said the class is open to adults and children age 12 and older, regardless of their previous fishing experience.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re experienced or not,” DeSanto said. “You’ll still enjoy our class, and you’ll pick up something.”
During the hands-on class, participants will learn the fundamentals of fly fishing, including the proper casting technique, how fly-fishing rods and lines work, equipment selection and the different flies used to attract fish.
DeSanto said beginners often try to cast a fly rod as though they are throwing a football. Instead, successful fly casting depends on timing and allowing the rod and line to do the work.
“We’ll help you with it,” DeSanto said. “You’ll be fly casting beautifully by the time we’re done with you.”
The Park District will have educational casting rods available that simulate the feel of a traditional fly rod. Participants will practice casting toward targets, including hula hoops, before moving on to regular fly-fishing equipment.
Those who already own a fly rod are encouraged to bring it, even if it has been sitting unused for years or was passed down by a family member. Fly rods will also be provided for those who do not have their own equipment.
“If you have one, bring it,” DeSanto said. “We’ll teach you with what you bring. If you don’t have a fly rod, we’ll have fly rods there for you.”
DeSanto, who has been fly fishing for approximately 30 years, will be joined by local fly-fishing experts, including Ashland Municipal Court Judge John Good and Ashland City Law Director Matt Malone.
Participants will also learn about the many types of fish that can be caught with a fly rod. While fly fishing is often associated with trout and steelhead, the same equipment can be used locally to catch bluegill, largemouth bass and other pond and river species.
DeSanto demonstrated a San Juan worm fly tied by Judge Good, explaining that the bead-head fly is especially effective for catching bluegill.
Fly-fishing opportunities can be found close to home in local ponds and rivers, while anglers looking for steelhead can travel to Lake Erie tributaries such as the Vermilion, Rocky, Chagrin and Grand rivers.
The class is being offered free of charge, but advance registration is required so organizers know how many participants to expect.
To register, call 419-289-1454 or contact the Ashland County Park District.
DeSanto said the event is another way the Park District can introduce residents to outdoor recreation while putting the David McClure Outdoor Education Center to good use.
“It’s really an exciting and fun thing to do,” DeSanto said. “The Ashland County Park District is bringing this free to the people of Ashland, and we’re glad to do it.”
Whether participants are holding a fly rod for the first time or dusting off an old family fishing pole, the class promises an enjoyable evening of instruction, laughter and outdoor adventure.
