Four-Vehicle Crash Involving School Bus Leaves Several Injured in Erie County

PERKINS TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol Sandusky Post is investigating a four-vehicle crash involving a school bus that left multiple individuals injured Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred on April 15 at approximately 4:06 p.m. along Perkins Avenue near Bayview Lane in Perkins Township, Erie County.

According to the preliminary investigation, a Ram 1500 driven by Derek Davies, 40, of Huron, was traveling eastbound when he failed to maintain an assured clear distance ahead. His vehicle struck the rear of a Perkins Local School bus operated by Barbara Richardson, 66, also of Huron, as the bus slowed for stopped traffic.

The impact caused a chain-reaction crash. The school bus was pushed into the rear of a Buick Encore driven by Mary Carey, 68, of Huron, which was then forced into another Buick Encore operated by Janet Wallace, 83, of Sandusky.

Authorities reported there were 52 occupants on the school bus at the time of the crash. Two students sustained minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky. Davies also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the same hospital for treatment.

Emergency crews from the Perkins Police Department, Perkins Fire and EMS, and Perkins Local Schools responded to the scene, along with assistance from Lucky’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
