Doug Miller Talks About This Day in History: Remembering Jerry De Marcus
Doug Miller talks about This Day in History and honors the sacrifice of Jerry De Marcus, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War on July 28, 1969.
De Marcus served with Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, known as the “Black Lions” of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division.
On that day, Delta Company was inserted into an area south of Dau Tieng known as the “Trapezoids.” The soldiers were sent to assist the 1st Infantry Division’s Aerial Rifle Platoon, commonly known as the ARPs.
The ARPs had entered an occupied North Vietnamese Army base camp and suffered several soldiers killed and wounded in action. Pinned down by enemy forces, the platoon was unable to withdraw.
As Delta Company approached the ARPs’ position, its soldiers were immediately met by heavy small-arms fire, machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
During the intense fighting, De Marcus was struck by small-arms fire and killed.
Today, 57 years later, Doug Miller remembers De Marcus and honors his courage, service and ultimate sacrifice.
